Urgent and Emergency Care
Only come to our Emergency Department at if it's for serious, life-threatening conditions that need immediate medical attention including persistent severe chest pain, loss of consciousness, acute confused state, severe blood loss, serious burns, suspected stroke.
You should only call 999 or visit the ED in a real emergency.
This includes a serious injury or life-threatening problem such as loss of consciousness, severe breathing difficulty, heavy bleeding, severe chest pain, suspected broken bones, deep wounds (e.g. stab wounds), swallowing something harmful or poisonous or a drug overdose.
The Emergency Department (ED) at King’s Mill Hospital deals with any emergency presentation from critically ill patients to minor injuries. The department has undergone a major refurbishment, trebling the size of the department.
It has separate children’s and young adults’ areas, a 7-bed state of the art resuscitation room, a 19 bay trolley area, a 10 room minors area.
It has also recently integrated with the out of hours GP service to allow all emergencies to be seen by the most appropriate clinician the first time.
The emergency department team comprises of consultants, registrars, junior doctors, advanced nurse practitioners, emergency nurse practitioners as well as support and reception staff.
It also has a discharge team to assist elderly patients getting home safely. The department has recently appointed a joint intensive care and emergency medicine consultant and is expanding consultant numbers from 6 to 12 to further improve patient care.
King’s Mill Hospital runs a ground breaking single point of access system where all GP referrals to the hospital are seen in the emergency department first. This allows rapid assessment and treatment of these patients, this has reduced the number of patients admitted to hospital by 30%.
The emergency department is among the best performers in the region for the emergency quality indicators and survival in major trauma.
Patients can also be admitted to a closely linked observation ward under the care of the emergency department, called the emergency admission unit.
Newark Hospital has an Urgent Treatment Centre that treats a range of acute conditions, this is open between 9am and 10pm each day (last patient admitted at 9.30pm).
We work closely with partners at East Midlands Ambulance Service and others to provide a variety of appropriate and timely services for patients who require urgent and emergency care.
