Newark Hospital is recruiting!

There’s nobody better to tell you what it’s like working at Newark Hospital than a nurse who has been there for 20 years.

Kerry Hazard, who has worked her way up from Healthcare Support Worker to Ward Leader, says she can’t see herself working anywhere else.

Kerry had plans to be a teacher or nursery nurse but put her career on hold to focus on raising her child.

After starting a temporary Healthcare Support Worker role at Newark Hospital, Kerry quickly realised that she wanted to be a nurse and started her training in 2006.

Kerry returned to Sconce Ward as a Registered Nurse in 2009 before becoming Deputy Ward Leader in 2013 and Ward Leader in 2019.

She said: “I love being part of the Trust, but particularly working at Newark Hospital. I grew up in Newark so delivering care to local people is a real privilege. There’s a real sense of belonging here and everyone is really friendly and helpful.

“At every step of my journey I’ve been encouraged and supported to develop - it shows you don’t always have to work in acute settings to progress in your career.”

She added: “There is a misconception that it’s a ‘community hospital’ where patients are ‘just’ waiting to be discharged, but we do a lot of sub-acute medicine - so much more than many people realise. I’d say nine out of 10 student nurses who come here for the first time are really surprised to find out the full range of care and treatment we provide.

“I’d encourage people to consider applying for a job at Newark Hospital and to come with an open mind.

“Seven of our newest nurses came here with the intention of moving on to acute services at King’s Mill Hospital after their initial training but all have since decided to stay because they love it so much!"

Although she’s currently on a short secondment at King’s Mill Hospital, Kerry said: “I don’t see myself working anywhere else in the long term.”
