Improved care for patients with musculoskeletal conditions

Patients with musculoskeletal conditions are receiving improved care thanks to a new hand-held ultrasound machine funded by volunteers at King’s Mill Hospital.
The portable, wireless machine, which is linked to a tablet, is used to provide real time diagnosis at the Musculoskeletal (MSK) Hub at Ashfield Health Village, in Kirkby-in-Ashfield and Mansfield Community Hospital.
It is also used to improve the accuracy of needle placement during guided injections for those with conditions affecting their muscles, joints, bones or tendons.
Patient experience is improved by reducing the number of appointments required by a patient through using the ultrasound as part of a one-stop service within a community setting.
It also helps patients’ understanding of their condition by enabling them to become actively involved in their assessment and treatment options.
The £5,000 machine was bought using profits from the Daffodil café and fundraising stall at King’s Mill Hospital.
Luke Ferreira, Advanced Clinical Practitioner in MSK, “Using ultrasound I can diagnose, tailor treatments, and accurately guide injection procedures. When I show patients the image on the screen it can prevent anxiety from the unknown, and support decisions about treatment options without added waits. Patients are very impressed and have commented on its value to help improve their overall experience. On behalf of the clinical team – thank you!”
It was one of the projects supported by the Trust’s Dragon’s Den project in 2024, which allowed teams at King’s Mill Hospital to bid for up to £5,000 for a service improvement idea that will enrich the patient and carer experience in their area of work.
