Stroke patients benefit from new equipment thanks to hospital volunteers

Patients who are recovering from a stroke are using an interactive projector as part of their rehabilitation at King’s Mill Hospital.

The £4,200 ultra-portable projection unit was purchased thanks to funding through Sherwood Forest Hospitals’ Dragons’ Den 2024, which allows teams to bid for up to £5,000 for an improvement idea that will enrich the patient and carer experience in their area of work.

The SENse Micro-wellbeing suite projector and software offers a wide choice of colourful, engaging projections that respond to and interact with body movement. Images, videos and activities that are of interest to patients of all ages, such as jigsaws, bingo, and word searches can be projected on to surfaces such as the floor, a table, wheelchair tray, or bed.

Lynda Bend, a specialist physiotherapist in the rehabilitation team, said: “Patients on wards 53 and 54 are using the projector to improve social interaction, independence and their physical and mental health and wellbeing. Patients are enjoying using the new equipment and both staff and patients are noticing improvements already.”

The Dragons’ Den project is funded by volunteers at King’s Mill Hospital with profits from the hospital’s Daffodil café and fundraising stall. A huge thank you to our volunteers and everyone who supports the café and stall.
