Why exercise during cancer treatments?
Research has shown that 25-50% of patients are less active after a cancer diagnosis.
It can be common to gain weight and lose muscle mass as a direct consequence of cancer or it's treatments, such as
Surgery
Radiotherapy
Hormonal treatments
Chemotherapy
Exercise may help to manage some of the common side effects of treatments, assist you in returning to normal activities and improve your quality of life.
Exercise during and after treatments can:
- Speed up recovery
- Help maintain energy levels and reduce fatigue
- Release natural endorphins, which can lift mood and lower stress hormones
- Improve bone health and protect against Osteoporosis
- Help to maintain a healthy weight
- Help to improve balance and strengthen muscles
- Decrease the possibility of developing other health related conditions such as Heart disease, Diabetes and High blood pressure.
Is it safe to exercise during treatments?
YES, but you should always seek medical advice before starting an activity.
It is important to follow some simple rules:
- Start slowly
- Gradually increase your activity levels
Your body needs time and energy to recover and it will take time to build up exercise tolerance.
If you feel unwell STOP.
