Haematology (Blood)

Often healthcare professionals can treat basic blood problems such as simple anaemia, however more complex, or unusual blood conditions are dealt with by the Haematology team.

We look after patients requiring regular blood transfusion due to bone marrow problems such as myelodysplasia. We also perform venesection on patients who have too much blood and we are also able to assess any unusual bleeding or clotting problems.

The majority of our services are run as outpatient clinics, with clinics at both King’s Mill and Newark hospitals. We have a highly regarded Haematology tele-clinic, which reduces the number of clinic visits for some patients to once a year. We also run warfarin control (anticoagulant) clinics. We try to minimise hospital visits for this large group of patients, and have also recently introduced an advanced computer system to help keep warfarin doses safe.

The team also deals with most kinds of blood cancers, such as lymphoma and myeloma. Some types of leukemia are treated at King’s Mill Hospital, although we transfer some patients with specific types of leukemia to the Centre for Clinical Haematology at Nottingham City Hospital. Consultants there also perform Stem Cell transplants on our patients if required.

Our range of services includes:

• General Haematology
• Hemostasis and thrombosis
• Hematological oncology
• Inpatient and outpatient chemotherapy
• Blood transfusion
• Haematology and anticoagulant tele-clinics.
